Next Stop Toronto!

Next Stop Toronto!

I'll be starting a job at U of T in August. Until then I need to wrap things up here in Manitoba and sort out some stuff in New York. Also, this page is past due for a revamp so hopefully that will be happening this summer.

Teaching at the University of Manitoba

Teaching at the University of Manitoba

I have taken on some teaching duties along with my job as Executive Director of GroundSwell Inc. I have been teaching composition lessons at the University of Manitoba and filling in for Orjan Sandred while he is away on sabbatical. This is a traditional first step for a young academic and a good opportunity. I am excited to be able to work in my field and do some teaching outside McGill. The University of Manitoba Faculty of Music recently moved into their new building! It seems like I have good luck with these things, as CIRMMT and the McGill library opened the year I arrived at McGill.

Executive Director of GroundSwell

Executive Director of GroundSwell

For the last year I have been working as Executive Director of Groundswell. Moving back to Manitoba has been an interesting opportunity to visit family and re-build some connections that I left behind when I moved to Montreal. This position will continue until Heidi Ouellette returns from maternity leave. This type of work will definitely require a new set of skills.

Ph.D. In Music Research and Composition

I successfully defended my dissertation and submitted my thesis. Technically I currently have my doctorate, which is exciting. The final step is the grad ceremony itself. The hats look quite scholarly and I look forward to seeing my fashionably understated friend Anthony wearing one.

GO GO METATRON!

GO GO METATRON!

Metatron won the Serge Garant Award from the SOCAN foundation!

This was my last time applying for a SOCAN, as I turned 31 shortly after submitting. An exciting end of the "young composer" part of my life maybe?
Thank you to those directly involved in the project. CIRMMT and Fabrice Marandola for supporting the project and the staff who helped make the concert happen. Also the talented recording engineer Christopher Johns, and Architek Percussion + guests who took extra time to make the recording happen. I will release a really cool video as soon as I can get this degree out of the way.

I am going to make a Metatron [lite] in the tradition of Streampunk [lite]. A more portable version that involves less fancy technology. (i.e. modular synthesizers and rhodes pianos)

The Meaning of a Format

The Meaning of a Format

As usual the upcoming concert The Meaning of a Format has taken up all my resources and time. Architek and CIRMMT have been great to work with. I'm looking forward to the concert. I rarely get this far into a project without hearing what the other composers are doing.

Metatron:

This is my farewell piece for my time at McGill. A bombastic, half our of colourful textures and technological fireworks. I really want to rock the house and am worried I will get turned down as always. ... For once in my life I want to be the one who decides how loud things are. I don't want things to be ear splitting, but I want them to be as loud and full as a well mixed rock concert. The only time I ever got that was at Usine C. We'll see how it goes! Come check it out.
